Match Report

On 8 August, four of the quarterfinal matches took place at the AFC Futsal Club Championship Indonesia 2018. Group A leaders, Nagoya Oceans who has won all three group stage matches, faced the Group B runners-up, Thai Son Nam FC (Vietnam).

Facing the Vietnam side who is currently led by the former Japan Futsal National Team Coach, Miguel RODRIGO, Nagoya showcased their dominance from the early minutes. In the sixth minute, HIRATA Neto Antonio Masanori, who has really excelled at this tournament, delivered the ball towards the centre, allowing ANDO Ryohei to score the opening goal. Nagoya’s pressure proved to be effective against Thai Son Nam, as they kept control of the match while possessing the ball in their attack. However, while Nagoya failed to extend their lead, Thai Son Nam utilised their speed to score the equaliser in the 18th minute. Just as the first half was about to end, with six seconds remaining on the clock, Ando pierced a fast cross towards NISHITANI Ryosuke, who slotted the ball into the net to give Nagoya a one-goal lead at halftime.

The second half turned into a different match, as Nagoya conceded the equaliser from the starting play of the half. Thai Son Nam broke their silence in the second half as they started to create more and more chances, turning the match into a see-saw game. Despite Nagoya’s effort to retake the lead, the momentum gradually shifted towards the Vietnam side. Nagoya did come close to scoring as they forced turnovers from their attacking end to initiate short counter attacks, but LUIZINHO’s shot struck the cross-bar, while HOSHI Shota’s effort was denied by the opposing goalkeeper. Failing to convert their chances, the second half ended with a score of 2-2, sending the match into overtime.

With both teams registering five fouls, it set up a situation where any foul would lead to a spot kick from the second penalty mark. In the 49th minute, Nagoya initiated their power-play but couldn’t convert this opportunity, and conversely allowed Thai Son Nam to take the ball and score the go-ahead goal.

Nagoya continued with their power-play for the remaining minutes to level the match but came short from scoring the goal. The Nagoya Oceans’ attempt to take down the Asian title for the second time in three years came to an end at the quarterfinals.

Comments of Nagoya Ocean's Coach and Players

Pedro Costa, Coach
I have a very mixed feeling. The match turned into a tough bout, just as we expected. Our approach was to work harder than our opponents and defend solidly to control the possession of the ball, which would lead to us taking control of the match. When we evaded our opponents’ pressure, we managed to keep our possessions high, and challenge their defence to create goal scoring opportunities. However, our quality at the final third was not good enough. What decided the match was my eagerness to win the match. My strong intention led to our team playing the power-play, which was countered and ultimately costing the match. We will feed off of this disappointment and earn results at the league play.

FP #5 HOSHI Ryuta
We had to close out the match when our opposing defenders were struggling to make the adjustments against us in the first half. They made their adjustments in the second half and the way we attacked was too simple as well. The match was physically very challenging, and our defence had a tough time adjusting to their long balls. There will be more scenes where our opponents come out making the necessary adjustments against us in the domestic league as well, so it might be the appropriate time to rethink the way we approach the matches. It’ll be too late if we start working on it after we lose a match, and I personally think we have plenty of time, so this might be the right time to make the change.

FP #7 ANDO Ryohei
Our opponents showcased greater momentum in the second half. We seemed to rush our plays against a team that sat deep in their territory, and they successfully exploited our mistake. Our opponents were seemingly tired, so we certainly didn’t have to rush our plays… We had many goal scoring opportunities, and by failing to convert those chances, it gave our opponents hope that they are still in the game. It is very disappointing especially because our opponents had almost zero chances in the first half. We must not forget this bitterness and work hard in the domestic league so that we can return to this stage again.

FP #9 HIRATA Neto Antonio Masanori
In the group stage we faced teams dropping so deep, it made it very difficult to play as a team. Today we faced a team that came out to play, so it was supposed to be a much easier match to cope with… We led the first half in the closing seconds and entered the second half with a great momentum, but it’s so regretful that we conceded early in the second half. With this result, we cannot be satisfied with our performance, but playing in my first AFC Futsal Club Championship, there were some aspects at the individual level that I felt I managed to do well, and it has given me great confidence. But at the end of the day, with the given playing time, I need to become a player that can score more goals.
