Match Report

On Sunday 5 August, the Nagoya Oceans faced the Vamos FC (Indonesia) in their third and final group stage match at the AFC Futsal Club Championship Indonesia 2018. With their advancement to the knockout stage already secured after winning their first two matches in Group A, Nagoya squared off against the Indonesian side with the group’s top spot at stake. The match venue was filled with the local Indonesian supporters, setting up a complete away atmosphere for the Nagoya Oceans.

Both teams started off the match rather passively, while the ball was mainly possessed by Nagoya. They created numerous goal scoring opportunities but were denied by the opposing defence including some impressive saves made by the opposing goalkeeper. Vamos FC on the other hand engaged in powerplay early in the match to catch Nagoya by surprise and to take the initiative, but their efforts also came short from finding the back of the net. After the match proceeded in silence for a while, it was Nagoya’s HIRATA Neto Antonio Masanori who broke the deadlock. In the eighth minute, he received the ball from HOSHI Ryuta from a set-pieced in the right side of their own end and slotted the ball into the opposing goal, giving the Japanese side their long-awaited goal. With momentum on their side, Nagoya tried to extend their lead in the first half, but the Indonesian side showcased a solid performance in defence to deny them from scoring another goal, as the match entered halftime with a score of 1-0.

The second half saw Nagoya gradually finding their rhythm, and it was LUIZINHO who gave them their second goal in the 23rd minute, when his powerful shot was deflected off an opposing player and into the net. Just three minutes later, LUIZINHO delivered the ball to Hirata, who was making a run at the centre and scored the team’s third goal. While anticipating to score more goals, Nagoya kept control of the match with the remaining minutes in consideration. In the 32nd minute, the team caught their opponents off guard as HOSHI Shota pinpointed a pass to HASHIMOTO Masaya who slotted the ball into the right-hand corner of the goal. The match saw no further action, as Nagoya earned the victory with a final score of 4-0. With two consecutive clean sheet wins, Nagoya topped Group A and advanced to the finals.

The Nagoya Oceans will now face the Group B runners-up, Thai Son Nam FC (Vietnam), in the quarterfinal scheduled on Wednesday 8 August with a kick-off time of 18:00.

Comments of Nagoya Ocean's Coach and Players

Pedro Costa, Coach
We once again faced a very tough match. With our opponents staying back deep in their half, it was difficult to break through their defence. With the way things went today, the final score of 4-0 was not anything surprising. Our opponents, Vamos FC, also managed to clinch the knockout stage, so we wish them luck. We have two days ahead of the knockout stage, so we will make sure to prepare ourselves well so that we can play to our full potential.

GK #2 SEKIGUCHI Yushi
I am glad we made it through to the next stage. However, our goal is to win the title, so we will prepare ourselves well to win three more matches. We thank all the support coming from Japan.

FP #6 HOSHI Shota
I am very happy that our team has advanced through to the next stage in my first AFC Futsal Club Championship. I personally want to contribute to the team by scoring goals, but the most important thing is to play for the team’s victory. I will continue to give my very best for the team win in the knockout stage, while seeking for the opportunities to score goals. Please keep cheering for us!

FP #10 YAGI Kiyoto
With our opponents representing the host nation, today’s match was surrounded by a complete away atmosphere. All three matches we played were tough matches, and I am glad we managed to win all three to advance to the next stage. I am pretty sure that the knockout stage will present us with great challenge as well, but we will fight through as a team. Personally, I just want to contribute for the team in whatever way possible, regardless of either offence or defence.
