Match Report

The Japan Beach Soccer National Team who is taking part in the Mundialito Almada 2018 held in Portugal, played their first match against Spain on Friday 15 June. The Japanese side made their first international match appearance in nearly a year since they participated in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahama. Despite levelling the match at one point with OKUYAMA Masanori’s goal, the team conceded multiple goals towards the end, losing the match with a final score of 1-6 against Spain.

Under intense sunshine, Japan kicked off the match at 12:30 local time. During the first period, GOTO Takasuke responded well to a ball delivered by TERUKINA Shingo to create a goal scoring opportunity, but his effort was denied by a superb save made by the opposing goalkeeper. In the third minute, the duo created another chance, but came short from scoring the opener. Conversely, just seconds later, Japan conceded the opener from a counter attack. Japan managed to score the equaliser on the seventh minute, when Okuyama converted a one-on-one situation created by a pass delivered by IINO Tomoyuki.

In the second period, Spain scored the go-ahead goal with a header from no angle in the 13th minute. Japan conceded their third goal in the 21st minute from an unfortunate own goal, finishing the second period trailing by two goals.

In efforts to regain their momentum, Japan utilised their substitutes in the third period, but instead conceded consecutive goals in the 27th, 32nd, and 33rd minute, off a volley shot, free kick, and an individual effort made by the Spanish side respectively. Losing to Spain with a final score of 1-6.

Japan will now face the host nation, Portugal on Saturday 16 June 17:45 local time in their second match of the tournament.

Players' Comments

FP #6 OKUYAMA Masanori (Loewe Yokohama)
First of all, I would like to thank everybody who supported our tour. It is unfortunate that we couldn’t mark a win in our first match since Coach RAMOS took over the team. However, we still have a chance of winning the title, so we will discuss within the team on what we need to improve to win the remaining two matches. We will fight through with the pride of the Japan National Team and give all we’ve got.

FP #8 KOMAKI Masayuki (Veertien Mie BS)
In today’s match against Spain, we couldn’t control the game. We rushed ourselves in offence, and we didn’t share a mutual understanding in defence neither. We must visualise what we must do to win the remaining two matches and prepare ourselves ahead of our match against Portugal tomorrow.
