Japan National Team’s meticulous preparation for Greece match

On the afternoon of Tuesday 17 June, the Japan National Team held practice sessions at their base, located in Itu in São Paulo, in preparation for their second group stage match against Greece in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The two-hour practice session started with some warm-up running and physical training with the ball. Then the players adjusted their tactics and playing combinations to match their upcoming opponents.

Next they will fly to Natal, the host city for the next game, where they will hold an open practice session on Wednesday 18. The match will kickoff at 7:00 pm on 19 June (7:00 am on 20 June Japan Time) at the Dunas Arena.

Comments

DF YOSHIDA Maya(Southampton FC/England)
I could have stayed calmer and shown my playing style, which would have provided stability from our team’s backline in the first game. Sometimes it’s important to stay positive rather than looking back to find faults, especially as the next match will be the day after tomorrow. I know Greece desperately need to play to win. As they are excellent in defence, it’s vital for us to start well, and not concede any goals. If we strike an opener, Greece have to come forward to score, which gives us a good opportunity to take the initiative in the game.

MF KIYOTAKE Hiroshi(1.FC Nürnberg/Germany)
Although Greece have a stonewalling defence, I don’t think we should rush forward. I’d rather watch for a chance, passing the ball, in order to attack. The team will be motivated, as every player has felt during practice sessions that they wish they were playing in the real thing. In times like this it’s important for backseat players to practice thoroughly as well. We had good sessions today and we’ll play well using what we practiced, no matter who is chosen to start.

FW OKUBO Yoshito(KAWASAKI FRONTALE)
We’ve built up a good atmosphere for the team. There’s no need to feel down and all we need is just to play. We are fully focused on how to attack and defeat Greece. I’ve watched some videos of the Greek national team and they are really big and strong with some good forwards. I don’t know how they play, so I’ll keep my wits about me and do my best.

FW KAKITANI Yoichiro(CEREZO OSAKA)
I know winning the next game is crucial to stay in the championship, as we lost the first game. Having said that, I think we should focus on playing our style to win. I don’t want over think things just because of the fact it’s the World Cup. I just want to play normally, sticking to our playing style. I will concentrate on winning the game, rather than thinking and adjusting to Greece’s game. Of course we need to score to win. I’ll assist whoever has a chance to shoot.
