Comment of U-19 Japan National Team Coach KAGEYAMA Masanaga

Our main goal is to secure our spot into the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019. We are in a very tough group and each match will present us with great challenges, but at the same time it provides us with a great opportunity to improve ourselves.

It’s been a year and a half since we have launched this team, and we have kept our motto to “Become a strong national team, rather than a good team.” Through thorough observation and analysing how each player has performed at the national team trainings and matches, we have selected the 23 players who can showcase their full potential at the Asian, and the World stage. Our team consists players from four age groups. The older age players have the advantage of playing in the professional level that much longer, while the younger players still provide us with plenty of international experience under their belt. The players have brought positive vibes and they are all looking forward to play with each other at the national level. We will take advantage of this positive atmosphere to prepare ourselves so that everyone can play up to their full potential.

This age category has attended the recent FIFA World Cup in Russia for 10 days as training partners for the Japan National Team and that experience has given these players great inspiration. Playing in these international tournaments will provide these players with high-level competition that can guide them to a higher stage, which will eventually lead them to play for the Olympics team and the Top team of the Japan National Team. With the 23 players and all the staffs, we will earn ourselves the ticket to the world stage as a team.

*The top 4 teams at the AFC U-19 Championship Indonesia 2018 will earn a spot into the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019.
