Match Report

The U-23 Japan Women’s National Team short-listed squad played a practice match against Shutoku High School (Men's Soccer Team) from Tokyo on Tuesday 23 August, the last day of the training camp.

There was still thick cloud following the typhoon, and the first period kicked-off under uncertain-looking weather. In the 11th minute, the opponents created a promising goal-scoring opportunity by sending the ball to the centre from the right wing, but goalkeeper FUKUMURA Kanae caught it. In the 13 minute, although the opponents again found the space behind the back line, defender NISHIKAWA Ayaka prevented them from scoring.

Midfielder ITO Miki sent a through pass in the 21st minute, but no one was on the receiving end of it. Then, in the 26th minute, the opponents got through from the right side and the ball went above and beyond the reach of goalkeeper FUKUMURA. Japan conceded an opener and the first period ended 0-1.

In the second period, Japan grabbed an scoring opportunity in the opening minutes. Although forward MICHIGAMI Ayaka fired a shot from a throw-in, it went wide. Soon after that, in the 33rd minute, midfielder MIZUTANI Yuki, receiving a pass from forward INOUE Ayaka, struck a goal and levelled the match 1-1.

In the 42nd minute, however, the team let the opponent dribble up from the centre line to the front of the goal to score. The team substituted all the field players in attempt to equalise, but they conceded another in the 51st minute. The match went into the third period at 3-1.

At the beginning of the third period, defender ISHII Saki sent the ball to the space behind the defenders. Although forward TANAKA Mina ran for it, it was judged offside. In the 68th minute, the opponents slotted the ball into the goal from a corner kick, building a three-goal lead. Then, Japan conceded their fifth in the 73rd minute. Opponents continued their attack and added to their scoreline in the 78th and 86th minutes.

The U-23 Japan Women’s National Team short-listed squad lost the training game 7-1.

Coach and Players' Comments

TAKAKURA Asako, Coach
I wanted the players to compete a little bit harder. However, the team didn’t perform well throughout the game, conceding many goals. I think we need to improve our systematic plays against stronger and faster opponents. There are many new faces in this team. I believe they became more aware of the play at the national level through this training camp. It’s just the beginning. I do hope the players practice hard back in their respective teams.

MF MIZUTANI Yuki (University of Tsukuba)
I’ve been struggling to perform well in the past two days. I felt like I failed to showcase my strength, but scoring a goal today brought my confidence back. As I learned clearly what I could and could not do through this training camp, I’d like to practice even harder back at my club.

FW TANAKA Mina (NIPPON TV BELEZA)
As there were many players, with whom I haven’t played with before, I was focusing on understanding their individual strengths and making good use of them. It was a shame that I couldn’t score and attain a positive result. Furthermore, as a team, we conceded many goals. We need to work on those issues. I joined Nadeshiko Japan's tour of Sweden, and the coach made similar remarks as here in this training camp. In the future training, I will focus on scoring goals, improving first touches and ball handling to play facing towards the opponents’ goal at my club.
