Match Report

U-20 Japan Women’s National Team short-listed squad started their training camp in Kagoshima and did not waste any time by playing a training match (three 40-minute periods) against the men’s team of Kagoshima Joho High School.

One minute into the match, the ball reached forward MOMIKI Yuka from midfielder SHIMAMURA Yukiko on the left flank. After getting the ball taken away once, Japan had forward TORIUMI Yuka get it back and midfielder HAYASHI Honoka fire the first shot of the match. The shot went over the goalmouth, but Japan National Team kept attacking afterwards. In the 32nd minute, however, the opposing high school team scored the match opener from a long feed on their right flank.

After allowing two more goals in the 48th and 55th minutes, Japan replaced everyone on the pitch in the 60th minute. Three minutes after that midfielder KAWANO Juri met a pass from right winger SHIOKOSHI Yuzuho to score the team’s first goal. In the 75th minute, midfielder HASEGAWA Yui took the ball in the opponents’ end and forward SHIRAKI Akari cut the deficit to one goal by composedly putting home the heel pass by Hasegawa.

Although wanting to get back onto level terms in the third period, Japan conceded another goal in the 71st minute. With forward Kawano scoring off a cross ball by left full-back KOJIMA Miku in the 118th minute, moments before the time-up, the training match ended with the final score of 4-3.

Coach and Players' Comments

TAKAKURA Asako, Coach
While we try to bring in many new players to the team we had for the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship, in today’s match against high school players we tried to see who can show her potential at which position. We came out for this match with our team’s motto “correlation between offence and defence” in mind, and the match turned out to show us both things we did well and did not. Both as a team and as individuals, we will face our present deficiencies and keep correcting them in this training camp.

KAWANO Juri (Waseda University)
This time I got selected onto this team for the first time, and I feel very blessed to get to play in this high-level group. I got to learn not only plays on the pitch but also what a top-tier player has to carry around such as off-the-pitch actions, what we say and expected personality. As this training camp has reminded me of what I usually don’t pay attention to when I am with my own team, I think this very enjoyable camp helps me get better as a person. In the training match against Kagoshima Joho High School, I got to play at a position I usually don’t play, and I was able to see football from a different perspective.

Also in the morning training session, we consciously worked on various things including receiving ball with purpose for following plays, controlling ball while moving, and playing mind games against defenders. I was always conscious of getting goals and firing shots without hesitation when I had a chance, so I think that attitude led to the goal I scored. But I still have things to improve. For the rest of the three days, I want to tackle as many of them as possible and learn a lot to get better.

YOSHIDA Nagisa (Kibi International University Charme)
I was having a lot of worries and nervousness in this environment for the first time, but in the yesterday practice, I was able to have fun playing. This team are at a high level and very inspiring to me. We couldn’t come out of the training match with a win, but I learned a lot there. I personally found a lot of things to be improved, which gave me a good starting point to get better from now on. I want to keep cherishing every single practice session for the rest of the three days in this camp and want to get better as much as possible.
