Hiroshima beat Marinos to win Xerox Super Cup
22 February 2014
Sanfrecce Hiroshima beat Emperor’s Cup winners Yokohama F. Marinos 2-0 at the National Stadium in Tokyo on Saturday to capture the Fuji Xerox Super Cup, the curtain-raiser for the new season.
Hiroshima’s goals came from youngsters Notsuda Gakuto and Asano Takumi. Nineteen-year-old attacker Notsuda put Moriyasu Hajime’s side ahead six minutes into the game, and substitute forward Asano made it 2-0 with a slick finish in the 65th minute.
Hiroshima played aggressively and took the initiative of the game, with Ishihara Naoki pulling the strings. In the sixth minute, he ran down the right side to cross the ball in for Notsuda at the far post, and the 19-year-old attacker connected with his left foot for the opener.
Sixty minutes later, Notsuda delivered a fine through ball for his 19-year-old counterpart Asano, who finished first time with a crisp, right-foot shot.
“This is one of the titles we aimed to win this season and I’m glad we were able to get it,” Hiroshima manager Moriyasu said. “This is a good start to the new season for us, but we haven’t established the form we want to have.”
Ahead of their opening match of the new J. League season away to Cerezo Osaka next Saturday, Hiroshima will play Chinese club Beijing Guoan at home on Tuesday night, their opening match of the AFC Champions League.
Marinos manager Higuchi Yasuhiro said, “Unfortunately, the scores indicate what the game was like today. Our players were not as fit as I thought they would be for the game.
“Hiroshima changed their defense from last season, and our players looked puzzled for the first 20 minutes of the game. We’d like to double-check our problems and work on our preparation for our next game.”
Marinos will play Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in Korea Republic next Wednesday in their opening ACL match before returning home to play Omiya Ardija on Sunday.
The 2014 J. League Division One season stars next Saturday and runs through to December 6.
Earlier in the day, a Japan High School XI beat an U-18 J. League XI 1-0 in the Xerox Super Cup Next Generation Match at the same venue.
