Japan to play Cyprus in World Cup send-off match

13 February 2014

Japan will play Cyprus in a Kirin Challenge Cup friendly on May 27 at Saitama Stadium before heading to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
“The match on May 27 will be important for us to prepare for the World Cup,” said Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni. “Cyprus are a side who play with solidarity and team power, and have some similarities with Greece, who we will play at the World Cup.”
“This match will also be our last home game before the World Cup, so I hope we will have full support from our fans at the stadium,” the Italian coach added.
Japan and Cyprus have never played before.
Zaccheroni’s side will play Cote d’Ivoire, Greece and Colombia in the group stage of the World Cup in June.
The kickoff time of the match will be announced later.
