Match Report

The U-17 Japan Women’s National Team substituted seven players from their first game to start the second match of the CFA International Women’s Youth Tournament 2016 Weifang.

Surrounded by local supporters, the game kicked off at 19:35. After 10 minutes, UEKI Riko dribbled up to strike at goal, only for it to be saved by the opponent’s goalkeeper. In the 27th minute, although ENDO Jun, who received a cross from TAKARADA Saori, took a shot, it went left of the goal. Then after 41 minutes, Japan conceded a goal from a corner kick. In the 43rd minute, just after the Japanese loss, NAGANO Fuka responded to Ueki’s pass, and dribbled up to shoot; unfortunately the opponent’s goalkeeper saved it superbly. The match went into the second half at 1-0.

In the second half, Japan continued to attack. After 53 minute, MIYAZAWA Hinata, who came off the bench after halftime, sent a pass to Takarada on the right side. Ueki reacted to a cross from Takarada, aiming at the goal, but the shot went right at the goalkeeper. In the 57th minute, Endo, who received a through ball from Takarada, faced the goalkeeper 1-on-1, but could not find the back of the net.

Although both MATSUMOTO Manaka and YAKATA Miyu were sent on in the 73 minute, neither could score before the final whistle. Japan have won one game and lost one so far in this tournament.

The team will face New Zealand, who will participate in the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Jordan, at 16:00 on Saturday 16 July local time for their last match.

Coach and Players' Comments

KUSUNOSE Naoki, Coach
The match against the host country China PR was a de facto final. Although Japan took the initiative from the beginning of the game, we were defeated, conceding a goal from a corner kick. We never gave up and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities – delivering our motto ‘keep trying’, which we’ve been following since this team was established. However, we couldn’t find the back of the net before the final whistle. We’ll analyse from various perspectives around the away environment, conditioning adjustment, tactics, and strategies in preparation for the last game, as well as for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, which will start on 30 September.

MF #6  KANEKATSU Rio (Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies Youth)
I felt the physical strength and speed of China PR by playing against them for the first time. It was good to learn what we could and we couldn’t do against them. As we couldn’t score from our opportunities, making the game tougher, I’d like to improve the quality of each play to get a win.

DF #7  ONO Nana (NIPPON TV MENINA)
We couldn’t find our momentum in passing in the first half, and couldn’t take the initiative even though we got near the goal with the ball. In the second half, although we took shots, we couldn’t find the back of the net, and let the opponent win the match 1-0 in the end. I’d like to work on our tasks, which we found in today’s game. I’ll play hard in the match against New Zealand, so that we can perform well to get a positive result.
